Are you having a hard time losing weight? Keeping the weight off? Or just want to have more energy? Do you want to wake up every morning feeling happy about life? Think about medical weight loss, rather than the usual weight loss programs out there. You can’t lose weight by taking pills, or going on some “amazing” diet that will have you lose 50 pounds in a few weeks by eating their food. Did you know that one-third of American’s are diagnosed with diabetes, digestive diseases and kidney disease?
In contradistinction to other weight loss programs, medical weight loss is not something you can just start on your own and self-treat. You will have a team of medical professionals help you customize your weight loss program. Your experts will focus on weight management that’s based on medical evidence to target the root causes of most weight diseases today. You’ll also have meetings with your medical professionals every week to discuss what you need to work on and what your goals will be. Everyone is unique and the same goes for losing weight, you just have to find the right one that fits you!
What Can you Eat on Medical Weight Loss?
Most medical weight loss programs focus on high-protein and low-calorie diets. Your body needs to focus on getting nutritional ketosis, which you burn primarily stored fat rather than glucose for fuel. Calorie counting will be the new norm for you and sometimes they can be as low as 700 calories a day. Don’t let that scare you though, talk with your medical professional to find out what works for you.
You will work with your medical professional to journal the number of protein calories consumed from fruits, vegetables, broths, and protein like chicken. You will also need to exercise. You can’t only eat healthy foods and expect to lose weight, exercise is key. If you have a smartphone, there are plenty of apps out there that can help you manage all of these. One suggestion that I personally use is MyFitnessPal. It helps you count and journal your calories, fat intake, gives you a personal workout plan, and even has a mountain full of recipes to help you eat healthier.
What you eat will depend on your program that your medical professional discusses with you. But if you want to get a head start to eating healthy, here’s a simple shopping list:
- Vegetables; kale, lettuce, spinach, asparagus, broccoli, celery, zucchini, cauliflower, bell peppers, artichoke, leaks, carrots, sweet potatoes
- Fruits; avocado, apricot, orange, berries, peaches, bananas, apples
- Other produce; beans, lentils, tofu,
- Lean meats; chicken, turkey breast, lean ground beef, pork tenderloin
- Fish; halibut, tuna, salmon, cod, tilapia, haddock
- Whole grains; quinoa, brown rice, wheat bread not white
- Diary; yogurt that doesn’t have a lot of sugar, low fat or almond milk, low fat chesses
- Nuts and seeds; almonds, walnuts, cashews, chia, flax, hemp
- Oils; olive oil, coconut oil, peanut oil, avocado oil, sunflower oil
- Last but not least, cage free or free range non-antibiotic eggs
Counseling for weight loss?
Losing weight is one of the hardest things you can accomplish in life. Sometimes you need help and a nutritional counselor is exactly what they are here for. They teach you how to lose weight and eat correctly. You’ll meet with your nutritional counselor every week to educate, motivate, and empower you to achieve those weight loss goals.
The Benefits?
Losing weight on your own is a struggle and most people give up after a week. Having a team of medical professionals and counselors to guide you and push you to reach your weight loss goals has a higher result. Being face-to-face with someone gives you more motivation to work hard on eating healthier and exercising. Research shows that even working on the keto diet has a lack of effectiveness, apart from a medical weight loss program. “One size fits all” doesn’t always work.
