Durable Medical Equipment
Durable medical equipment refers to equipment used to assist in helping a patient recover quickly and efficiently following surgery or an injury. The durable medical equipment can also assist patients with resuming daily activities without worsening their condition. Typically braces and orthotics are the most commonly used equipment for patients following surgery or dealing with long-term pain. A large majority of the healing process will take place on your own at home. Durable medical equipment is designed to help patients with at-home treatments to prevent additional injury, and to assist in the healing process.
To assist in your healing process, Life Health Medical Center will provide a variety of Durable Medical Equipment depending on the patient’s specific needs. Some durable medical equipment includes but is not limited to:
• Braces
• TENS Units
• Cervical Traction Units
Custom Braces
Our custom braces are created to meet your body’s specific need. We create personalized braces to aid in the corrective process. For example, if a patient has recently undergone knee surgery, we can create a custom knee brace that is designed to help the knee remain in the proper position when the muscle is not strong enough to support the knee. We often create braces for patients suffering with postural problems and back pain. With back braces we realize the importance of comfort. The brace must also fit the patient to correctly stabilize the back and quicken the healing process of said injury. If you need a custom brace, contact our Salt Lake City Medical Center for more information.
TENS Unit
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. It is a noninvasive pain treatment which can result in patients eliminating pain and anti-inflammatory medications. When the TENS unit is used, it will start by attaching small sticky electrodes to the skin directly over the area where a patient is experiencing pain. When TENS is turned on, it will turn on a small light and will deliver a current through the electrodes to the skin and tissues. TENS does have small tinging, but rarely does it cause severe pain. The intensity can be adjusted, which can make the muscle twitch. TENS will disrupt the pain cycle by sending the current through the skin and to the area where a patient is experiencing discomfort. TENS helps to trigger the body to release endorphins, which help to promote a feeling of well-being, and offers natural painkillers. This unit gives the patient the control to administer as much pain relief as they want. It can help treat symptoms such as labor pain, menstrual pain, joint pain, and post-surgery pain. TENS is also beneficial with treating the following conditions:
- Endometriosis
- Arthritis
- Sports Injuries
- Spinal Cord Injury
- Fibromyalgia
Cervical Traction Unit
Neck pain, spine pain, and hip pain are normally treated with a cervical traction unit. A cervical traction unit will relieve pain associated with the spine and neck by using compression. For a spinal issue, the head is lifted to stretch the muscles in the neck, allowing the vertebrae to be opened, and tension released. This tension release leads to attract healthy cells to the area and increasing blood flow throughout the neck promoting healing. A lumber traction device will force the lower spine to reduce pain associated with muscle spasms and nerve impingement. We carefully monitor patients undergoing treatment to ensure it is being used correctly, and patients are finding relief. This treatment is both highly effective and fast-acting.
